WELCOME TO THE SOUTH COUNTY TIGER BAY CLUB
It is composed of multi-partisan individuals who have been part of the history and development of south Sarasota County, and who are recognized as leaders and individuals who consider the future of the quality of life in the communities of Venice, Nokomis, Osprey, North Port and Englewood of paramount importance. It is a not-for-profit organization.
It is composed of active and retired business, civic leaders and governmental leaders who have a common goal of developing and supporting ‘Reponsible Government, Managed Growth Planning and Quality of Life Changes for the Future.’ They collectively recognize and support efforts to maintain and constantly improve all aspects of living in south Sarasota County.
The South County Tiger Bay Club meets monthly - more often if issues are pressing - for lunch to discuss issues of responsible growth, government, politics, development and taxes. Their meetings will be open to members and their invited guests. Speakers include local, state and national public officials and business leaders to come and discuss issues impacting the community. Tiger Bay members will be able to openly have question and answer sessions with speakers to discuss issues of concern.
The Tiger Bay Board of Directors consists of three members from the City of Venice, three from North Port, three from Englewood and four at-large members for a total of 13 members of the board and executive committee.
There are more than 25 Tiger Bay Club Chapters throughout the State of Florida with the Capital Tiger Bay being the oldest, largest and most well known. It was started when former Governor Rueben Askew was in office. Each operates independently, but have the same objectives.
PURPOSE AND GUIDLINES
The general nature of THE SCTB CLUB is multi-partisan, political, civic, educational and charitable. It is created to promote the general welfare.
The purpose for which THE SCTB CLUB is incorporated, and for which it functions are to:
(a) Provide an open forum for the expression and analysis of the issues, personalities and affairs of Local, State and Federal government.
(b) Educate its members and, through them, the public as to the processes, issues, institutions and personalities of Local, State and Federal government.
(c) Bring together in an atmosphere of fellowship and good fun, citizens from diverse backgrounds who are united in their resolve to improve the quality of government.
(d) Reawaken a concern for, and promote participation in governmental and political affairs on the Local, State, and National levels of government.
(e) Have the actual operation of our government more closely resemble our ideals of a democratic form of government.
(f) Foster enthusiastic concern for the community.
(g) Promote the exchange of ideas concerning the relationship between citizens and government, the role of government in improving the quality of life, the goals to which government should direct its efforts and into which it should invest its resources, the order of importance of those goals, and other similar topics which may interest the membership.
South County Tiger Bay Club was formed September 1, 2007 as a non-partisan organization with a membership consisting of professional men and women, both active and retired, of all ages who have an interest in politics, county and municipal government, school board and local education issues and all activities, which impact the taxpayer and quality of life in south Sarasota County.
Several Tiger Bay members are elected or appointed to positions within the city, county, state and federal government. Others are government relations representatives of corporations, lobbyist, lawyers, business owners and many serve on governmental committees. The vast majority of Tiger Bay members are active in their respective political parties.
The Charter and By-Laws forbids the Club from endorsing candidates or taking sides in political campaigns. However, it is fun to watch our members take sides and voice their opinions to one another about particular candidates, parties and issues.
Political and controversial public figures invited to speak before the club are advised - in advance - that they may be subject to questions by the membership at large.
MEMBERSHIP
The South County Tiger Bay Club has a membership which represents the communities of Venice, Englewood and North Port, as well as North Venice, South Venice, Nokomis, Laurel and Osprey with diversity and a broad spectrum of the views and interests that enhance our community, state and country. The membership consists of more than 300 individuals, which includes a diverse cross-section of residents who are retired or involved in business, community activities and political parties, as well as elected and appointed local and state officials and professionals active in various governmental committees or advisory boards.
Any person shall be eligible for membership who is of good character and reputation and who has demonstrated an interest in the affairs of the government and the political process by their active participation, support or involvement. New members must be sponsored by a Charter Member.
